Having your own startup business doesn’t mean that when you are on vacation, the phone won’t ring. You are wrong here, because having a startup business means to be available at any time, because it is yours and you need to give yourself to the business. So, get used to it startup founders, entrepreneurship takes more time than you expect!
There is one law involved here, the Hofstadter’s Law, which states “It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take into account Hofstadter’s Law.” Entrepreneurship is more complex than you think and it will take more time than you think. So planning to finish your project on time will not give you free time after that, after finishing that project it is always better to keep an eye on the other ongoing projects in your company.
Optimism bias presents a psychological principle and an inherent cognitive bias which almost everyone possesses to some degree. This sets the stage for underestimating the amount of time it would take to get something done.
“Entrepreneur” is not only a one day job, and not only one role to be played. One day you will be financial director, other day you will be project specialist, so don’t think that you have only one role to play in the startup business. Multitasking, as it is, is hard, but you need to do multitasking as long as you are and you want to be an entrepreneur.
Entrepreneurs sometimes forget to do the paperwork, and not all have assistants to do the job. That’s why some entrepreneurs don’t estimate the time correctly for some tasks, because after finishing the task there is a pile of paperwork that needs to be done, data to be entered and papers to be signed. This may sound easy, but it takes a lot of time to be done.
