After graduation maybe you think that it is time to stop learning and you will break free from the books and all those “boring” materials. This is not true at all, because new challenges are on the horizon, as we find new job we need to learn how to do it in the right way, or even new relationship, you need to learn how to take in on the right path.
This is very important and you should take it for granted: To stop learning is to stop improving, and that is the worst thing that you can do for you.
That’s why we have three learning principals for you, how to become more effective learner. Knowledge is power folks!
1. Embrace discomfort
This can be explained with a simple trick that you can do at the gym. Let’s say that you want to exercise with 10 pound weights. Take them and start. After making few movements, you find it hard and eventually you quit and change them into 5 pound weights. The trick is that while 5 pound weights make you feel more comfortable and you can exercise for longer time, the heavier ones are doing better for you, providing better workout. It is the same with learning.
With easier stuff you feel like you are learning more but the truth is that you learn more when you are struggling with the material.
Actually you are studying the material thoroughly. We think that first you should distinguish the difference between studying and learning! If you take a look at the dictionary you will find these definitions:
– studying: devote time and attention to acquiring knowledge on (an academic subject), especially by means of books.
– learning: the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, study, or by being taught.
So, first study the subject in order to learn something.
2. Stop cramming
This addresses the fast learning, like before the exam you sit down for a learning marathon and you think that you are ready to pass. The trick is to memorize the information for a long term and this will help you to use them in the future when you need it again.
3. Make connections
This is very good strategy and it will help you to remember more. Try to connect the context of the material with some other that you read or studied few weeks ago. It will be very easy for you to remember what is what when you need it.
Either you are aware or not, we all learn from each and every situation in our lives. The point is, to take this for granted and continue improve ourselves. That will determine who will rule the game!
